A COMMONLY INDOOR HOUSE = OUTDOOR MODULAR PRIVACY
The House project aimed to transform, for residential use, the rustic design of split-level House, located on the greenery filed a few kilometers from Nonsung in Korat, Nakron Ratchasima, Thailand.

A house design for a Thai and Australian couple in Nonsung, located in the suburbs of Korat City. The site is covered with tropical vegetation in its plot; however, one of requirements is to divide their privacy spaces from the nearby surrounding. Separately, the surrounding buildings have their first level elevated more than 1.5 meters above the street level. The owner’s request was to need the second level be elevated 3.5 m above the street level. At the same time, to maximize the site and location advantages, the design for living space should be open to a rice field and pond nearby so that the owners could be closer to the environment.

Some areas in suburban context express an environmental characteristic of the flooded landscape; TH Studio Architects designed the house as five slabs floating above the ground. The slabs are rectangular in shape between the upper and lower floors. The space between each level creates a diversity of spaces indoors and outdoors. Each slab is extended toward the green spaces, cantilevering in multiple directions as a terrace or outdoor space, and a heart of space is an open well of an inner courtyard opening to all privacy spaces, and a roof to cover an outdoor staircase. The roof slabs are also connected to all outdoor spaces, including the rooftop, by a secret staircase free from the ground level. In other words, all circulation is continuous using the outdoor space without cutting through the indoor.

In the concrete construction method. The idea was to use a beamed slab to extend the floor as a cantilever while using slim columns to support it. The goal is a light structure in which the interior and exterior are continuous, and the slab seems to float above its surroundings. Including the rooftop design as a sky desk, nearly 50% of the floor of this house is a greenery outdoors. Moreover, when folding doors are opened, almost all the space is outdoors, except for a studio and bathroom space.

On summer days, a ventilation wind flows through all of the openings. When it rains, the air is suddenly cooled by evaporation. Along with the open outdoor space of location, this is a tropical dwelling where they can always feel close to nature even if they need to more privacy spaces. This house focuses on the active outdoor life in Thai context, with a new surround and structural design to live in daily life.

MK House project transformed a rustic split-level design in Thailand for a Thai-Australian couple, maximizing its connection to nature and privacy.
